It depends on who you would like to sound like, I mean Malmstien has a great clear voice it is loud of course and at times screaming but always clear. But then if we take the singer from AC/DC his voice sounds like he is purposely straining his voice, which also sounds great of course.
Then there is the short choppy voice like the singer from Rush had. The strained sound seems most prominent maybe starting with Roger Daltree from the Who. Then again Jimi Hendrix sang in his own voice he did nothing to change his voice. True that was because he was a guitarist not a singer but it worked and sounded good too. He became a good singer because of that.

You scream until you cannot scream any more then you keep going anyway. You will damage your voice but it will be worth it.
