Heavy Metal tends to be much more louder and have more guitar solos.
Some examples of heavy metal bands would be Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Slipknot, Iron Maiden, and Twisted Sister.
Rock often revolves around the electric guitar or acoustic guitar, and it uses a strong back beat laid down by a rhythm section of electric bass guitar, drums, and keyboard instruments.
Examples of rock are Weezer, The Who, Nirvana, and Pearl Jam.
