What is considered indie rock?

Indie doesn’t really have a label, there is rock but Indie sounds too poppy to be rock n roll but Indie is not catchy, so there’s really nothing to call it but Indie.

bah, idie rock is put out on independent record labels. that’s it. the genres that people put on music varies greatly.

its a rock found somewhere in india i belive..it could be a religous rock or just a plain rock..but most of the time its a plain rock.

I’m not quite sure if something actually defines a band as Indie…. to an extent i think it is something to do with the lyrics oh idk meaning something lol… can’t help all i know is Bright eyes is amazing and so is Death cab for cutie, modest mouse… classics

to me, indie is the new pop. indie means independant, but i mean there are so many “indie” bands signed to huge record labels like warner bros, indie is just a term nowadays given to a music genre. I don’t know where you’re from but in the UK we had a show called top of the pops (if your from the uk you’ll know) ..and basically it was cancelled after 20 years, a girl from a famous pop band said “theres no room for a lot of pop anymore, indie is the new pop” ..personally i depise the indie scene..but thats my answer anyway !

Right, this isn’t an easy question really. Technically, if we’re taking the old view on things, Indie was the term used for bands on independant record labels. Through time obviously things change and it became the name of a genre of certain sounding music.
Indie music nowadays is typically that of firstly: musicians heavily influenced by certain fashion trends. Guys in skinny jeans, trillby hats etc seem the indie norm.
And musically, it has nothing to do with non mainstream as such. In the UK right now, Indie music is prob the biggest selling of all with the likes of Arctic monkeys, the libertines etc coming along.

The purest answer I would say is that technically any band that is “independently” pursuing their career on their own could be labeled “indie”. However, the term indie has come to define a genre of music. Musically, bands like “The Strokes” or “Wilco” or the other bands you mentioned could potentially be labeled as such, but “The Strokes” are hardly on an independent label, “RCA” is a large and old company. Wilco is on “Nonesuch” which would be considered pretty obscure by a lot of casual music fans. In reality though, “Nonesuch” is owned by “Warner Music Group” – so are they indie anymore? It’s really subjective, that’s really the bottom line!

this question is asked almost daily and each time people give completely off the wall answers…my point is that no one even knows what “indie” is anymore…its not supposed to be a genre like everyone says it is (they refer to an “indie” sound but there is no such thing)…lets all just never use that word again and be done with it already!!!!!
