How does classical music and modern pop music relate to religion?

How does classical music (sonatas, etc…) from the 17th – 19th century and modern pop music (rap, rock’n roll) relate to religion (Christianity). Would you say that one type of music was more meaningful or spiritual or still share the same concept about God.

I don’t think they have anything to do with religion now, but many instrumentals of the previous centuries were written to be played in church as a prelude to a service.
