where to find pop music ready for recording?

Ben F asked:

A friend and I want to do an album of comical versions of famous songs. We’re not musical performers, so we’re looking for already ready instrumental pop songs that we can put our voices in front of and release commercially. I know there are sites to get rights to songs; but I don’t see any where they supply you with the music too. Could you someone suggest where to look? Thanks.

You are kind of looking for prerecorded instrumental tracks and/or karaoke tracks. There are plenty out there, but in addition to getting rights to the songs themselves, you need to get permission to use the actual recordings themselves from the company that makes them (and you get this permission from the company that produced the track–and it isn’t cheap).

    For example:

Sometimes there is a certain amount of leeway given to songs that are clearly “parodies” of the originals–however, Weird Al Yankovic makes a point to ALWAYS ask for the artist’s permission to use their music–just to avoid any legal hassles or objections later on.
