What is better for modern pop/rock music, acoustic or electric guitar?

Accoustic is unquestionably better if you’re just playing by yourself, because it’s percussive enough you don’t need to drums, but you absolutely can’t play a solo on it. Electric has so much more range and flexibility, but you need a drummer. (Or a good drum machine.)

Better is such a vague term as to be pretty much useless? Which one is better? Well it depends on which one you like better.
Apart from metal, I’d argue that either instrument can be equally good at any of those genres you mentioned. But then again, why not play metal with an acoustic? Who would have thought that the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra could pull of Metallica? The great thing about music is that you don’t have to be bounded by expectations and pre-conceived notions.
As to the guy who said that you absolutely can’t play a solo on an acoustic guitar – that’s just crap. Uninformed crap. Obviously you’ve never listened to (or heard of) Michael Hedges, Tommy Emmanuel, John Butler, Tim Reynolds, Rodney Branigan, or any other number of acoustic guitarists who can absolutely shred on the acoustic.
So What is better…? It depends what you like. Find your sound and you will know what you should be playing it on. The instrument is just the tool. The music has to come from you.
